A complete failure July 3, 2010 A Customer (Silver Spring, MD USA) This kit comes with five round tins with plastic bags containing pre-measured plaster of paris. For each tin, you mix a certain amount of water (1/4 cup for the 1 year tin) with most of the supplied plaster to achieve a "toothpaste like" consistency. Then you pour that into the tin, press your child's hand in, and you're supposed to wind up with a beautiful imprint to treasure.
Instead, when you follow the directions you wind up with a stick, blobby mess that could be your child's handprint, or might be an interpretive sculpture of a lunar crater, or might just be what's left in the bottom of a bucket of plaster after doing some wall repair. We tried doing what other reviewers suggested: repeatedly taking imprints as the plaster dried a bit; varying the initial consistency (taking the year 2 tin's plaster supply after scraping out the quickly drying failure we achieved with the year 1 supply); and finally even oiling our child's hand before the imprint. All attempts failed to produce anything other that an unpleasing, lumpy mess.
If you plan on using this kit, I suggest going to an art supply store first, getting some plaster of paris, and spending some time learning to work with it. I'm sure you'll then be able to match the results pictured on the product's web page. But then, if you do that, you don't need this kit.
In sum, this product is worthless. Don't buy it for yourself, and certainly don't buy it as a gift.
The Best Baby Shower Gift May 13, 2010 N. Kapanka (PA, USA) This had become my best baby shower gift ever. It is smaller than you might expect, but after looking at it closer you will realize it is the perfect size and truly will be a treasured keepsake. I usually add something else to this gift for the baby and also tell the mother-to-be that it doesn't have to be years 1 thru 5 but whatever stages of growth they would like to capture, such as new-born, then years 1, 5(starting school, 10 (double digits) 13(becoming a teen).
This is great! April 24, 2010 Jamie E. Lumpkin (York, PA) I think this is such a neat idea! I received it as a baby shower gift and then I gave one as a baby shower gift! It was such a huge hit! I am happy I will be able to capure those memories with my son forever.
a few things I would change February 11, 2010 R. Cutler The stacking container is really cute, but it was slightly more difficult than I thought it should have been to get a decent handprint out of it. Also, maybe I didn't read the product description closely enough but the smallest size says "1 year" on it, and I was hoping to use it when my daughter was younger (in fact, I did use it when she was 9 months because her hand was barely big enough to fit in the "1 year" container at the time). I wish that instead there had been a label for the parent to write the date/age of child when the handprint was taken, instead of being prelabeled with 1 year 2 year and so on.
Handprints February 6, 2010 Janette G (New York) This is wnoderful gift for a new born babies gift. I have bought one of these every time my nieces have a baby. And I just purchased 2 more for my daughter who is having twins. The kids will cherish their tiny handprints when they get older and have something to look back at.
